SunCoChem project results presented at the 15th European Congress of Chemical Engineering (ECCE) & 3rd Iberoamerican Congress on Chemical Engineering (CIBIQ) in Lisbon
Project partners from Politecnico di Torino (POLITO) showcased some key results and achievements of SunCoChem at the 15th European Congress of Chemical Engineering (ECCE) & 3rd Iberoamerican Congress on Chemical Engineering (CIBIQ), held from 15–19 September 2025 in Lisbon (Portugal).
Hilmar Guzmán, Assistant Professor at POLITO, delivered a presentation titled “Scaling Up Electrocatalytic CO₂ Capture and Conversion: Towards Sustainable Syngas Production”, highlighting the latest advancements in the electrochemical cell developed within the project in collaboration with Hysytech.

In addition, Simelys Hernández, Associate Professor at POLITO and SunCoChem’s Technical Coordinator, chaired the first session of the IS07 – Iberoamerican Symposium on CO₂ Conversion and Utilization, and delivered an invited talk titled “Assessing the activity and stability of Cu₂O/SnO₂-based Gas Diffusion Electrodes for the CO₂ conversion in different electrolytes: Bicarbonate vs. Ionic Liquid/Acetonitrile”.
The SunCoChem project, which ended in October 2024, has developed a TRL5 prototype of photo-electrochemical reactor to manufacture chemicals using renewable energies drawing on carbon dioxide (CO₂) recovered from the chemical industry and solar energy. This innovation manages to reduce costs, reduce CO₂ emissions and improve the efficiency of converting energy from sunlight to chemicals.
