D2.2 - Preliminary selection of materials for CO 2 capture and concentration stage and TBM - Executive Summary
The report shows preliminary selection of materials for preparation of improved polymeric membranes for CO2 capture, selection of novel ILs with high CO2 solubility and high electrochemical stability and materials for the transparent bipolar membrane with proper ions conductivity and transparency. The results provided are based on experimental studies considering state-of-art generated in Deliverable 2.1.
The membranes for CO2 capture were prepared with polysulfone and modified with ILs by different approaches: physically by simple soaking of the porous membrane in ILs, and a first attempt for chemical modification by ion exchange is also reported. Physical and chemical material analysis was performed to follow the efficiency of modification. The ionic liquids used for membrane modification as well as for CO2 absorbent in membrane contacting system were synthesized, both classic and custom ones, and characterized. Moreover, a CO2 capture mechanism by ILs is presented. The electrochemical stability window testing is included. The bipolar CEM/AEM membrane was prepared at CNRS by interposing a web of anion and cation exchange fibres obtained by electrospinning at the interface between cation and anion exchange polymer layers prepared by casting and spray coating, respectively. The prepared TBMs were characterized for their morphology, composition, ion conductivity, transparency and performance.
